Luton has not published its Christmas 2026 bin dates. Last year most rounds moved a day earlier, and the calendars only appeared on 19 December.
Luton Borough Council has not yet published its Christmas and New Year bin collection dates for 2026. We checked its bin pages and its whole website on 25 September 2026 and there is nothing yet, which is normal: last year’s changes only went online in the week before Christmas.
What last year shows is that Luton does not simply push everything back a day. Most Christmas-week rounds came a day early, including Christmas Eve, and only the Friday rounds moved later.
The quick answer
The 2026 dates are not published yet. In 2025 the council’s four printed bin calendars, all created on 19 December 2025, moved the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday rounds of Christmas week one day earlier and Friday’s to Saturday. New Year’s week changed only on Thursday and Friday. Check your date in mid-December, not before.
What we already know about Christmas 2026
None of these is a collection date, but they settle the shape of the problem:
- The bank holidays fall on two Fridays and a Monday. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December 2026, the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to a substitute Monday 28 December, and New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January 2027 (GOV.UK).
- Garden waste will already have stopped. The 2026 garden waste season ends on 4 December 2026, so brown bins are not collected over Christmas at all (Luton Council).
- Food waste is new since last Christmas. Weekly food caddy collections started on 31 March 2026 (Luton Council), so Christmas 2026 will be the first festive period for that service, and last year’s table covered no food waste round at all.
The council’s own collection lookup only shows about six weeks ahead. December dates will start to appear in the lookup from around mid-November, but last year the adjusted Christmas dates were only set out in the printed calendars on 19 December.
Last year’s changes: a guide, not this year’s dates
These are the changes Luton printed for Christmas 2025. They are not this year’s dates, and the weekdays fall differently in 2026. They are here because they show how the council handles the holiday: it moves collections forward where it can, and only pushes a round later when there is no working day before it.
The same table appeared on all four of the council’s round calendars, weeks 1A, 1B, 2A and 2B (Luton Council bin calendar, week 1A; week 2B).
| Normal collection day | Collected on |
|---|---|
| Tuesday 23 December 2025 | Monday 22 December (a day early) |
| Wednesday 24 December 2025 | Tuesday 23 December (a day early) |
| Thursday 25 December 2025 | Wednesday 24 December (a day early) |
| Friday 26 December 2025 | Saturday 27 December |
| Tuesday 30 December 2025 | No change |
| Wednesday 31 December 2025 | No change |
| Thursday 1 January 2026 | Friday 2 January |
| Friday 2 January 2026 | Saturday 3 January |
Monday rounds do not appear in the table at all, in either week.
What that could mean for 2026, and why we will not guess
This year both bank holidays in Christmas week sit on the Friday and the following Monday, so the Friday round is the one that has to move, and the Monday 28 December round is the one with no obvious home. New Year’s Day is also a Friday. Luton’s habit of moving rounds a day early rather than late could apply again, but the council has not said so, and we will not print dates it has not published. This page will carry the real table as soon as it exists.
Christmas trees, wrapping and the tips
- Real Christmas trees. The council’s tip guidance lists whole or unsectioned trees more than 150mm across among the things its Tidy Tips will not accept, so a big tree needs cutting down before it goes (Luton Council). With garden waste finished on 4 December, the brown bin is not an option either.
- Paper and cardboard go to the Tidy Tips as well as in your recycling bin.
- The two Tidy Tips, Eaton Green Road (LU2 9RT) and Progress Way (LU4 9TR), open 9am to 7pm on Mondays, 9am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday and 8am to 5pm at weekends, and need no booking. Neither site page carries any Christmas opening hours yet (Eaton Green Road Tidy Tip). Bring photo ID and proof you live in Luton.
The full rules on permits, vans and what each bin takes are on our Luton bin collection days page.
Still to be confirmed
- The 2026 revised collection dates. Expected in December; last year’s appeared on 19 December. We will check from 1 December and update this page.
- Food waste over Christmas. Whether the weekly caddy round follows the same table.
- Christmas opening at the two Tidy Tips. Nothing is published yet.
