Luton train times to London: 27 mins, £5,480 a year

Luton is 27 minutes from London St Pancras on the fastest East Midlands Railway service, direct, with no change. That is quicker than most towns twice as close to London, and it is the single biggest reason people move here.

It is also only part of the picture, because Luton has three stations on the same line and they behave very differently. Leagrave is slower than Luton and costs exactly the same. Luton Airport Parkway is faster than both and costs less. Every figure below was checked on 13 August 2026.

The three stations, compared

Journey times and how often trains run

Two operators use the Midland Main Line through Luton. East Midlands Railway runs the fast trains, which skip Leagrave. Thameslink runs the stopping service, which calls everywhere and carries on through central London to Farringdon, Blackfriars, London Bridge and Gatwick without you changing.

On a normal weekday morning the pattern from Luton looks like this: an East Midlands train at 08:25 reaching St Pancras at 08:52, 27 minutes, and Thameslink services at 07:57, 08:01 and 08:13 taking 36 to 46 minutes depending on how many stops they make. From Leagrave, every train is a Thameslink and the journey runs 40 to 42 minutes. From Luton Airport Parkway, the 08:28 East Midlands service reaches St Pancras in 24 minutes.

For London Bridge, stay on the Thameslink and do not change: Luton to London Bridge takes 51 minutes direct, with trains roughly every 15 minutes in the morning peak.

Season tickets

Adding a zones 1 to 6 Travelcard costs £1,420 a year on top of the Luton season. That is worth it only if your journey continues by Tube or bus most days; if you walk from St Pancras, it is dead money.

Set against the Luton house price of £315,000, a £5,480 season is roughly what a resident pays every year for the 27 minutes. It is the single largest running cost of commuting from here and it belongs in the sums before you buy.

Buying a single

Two things in that table catch people out. Contactless pay as you go works at all three stations, so you can tap in without buying anything, but at Luton and Leagrave it costs exactly the same as an anytime single in the peak, so it saves you queueing rather than money. And advance singles are operator-specific: the £8.90 fare is valid on East Midlands Railway trains only, and the cheap Thameslink-only advance from Luton starts at £14.70. Board the wrong train with the wrong ticket and you are buying a new one.

The three stations in practice

Luton

753 parking spaces, five of them accessible. The ticket office opens Monday to Friday 05:45 to 21:45, Saturday 05:45 to 22:00 and Sunday 06:45 to 21:45. Step-free access is rated category B3, meaning some platforms are reachable step-free but possibly in one direction only, which is worth knowing before you turn up with a pushchair or a suitcase.

Luton Airport Parkway

The best-equipped of the three: 824 spaces with 12 accessible bays, a ticket office open until 00:30 on weekdays, and full step-free access, category A. It is also the station the Luton DART shuttle runs from, covered below.

Leagrave

376 spaces, three accessible, ticket office Monday to Friday 06:00 to 19:30, Saturday 06:00 to 19:20 and Sunday 07:45 to 17:45. Step-free category B3. Leagrave only gets Thameslink stopping services, so it is the slowest of the three into London on an identical season ticket. Its case is the car park, which is far easier to get a space in on a weekday morning than Luton’s.

The Luton DART to the airport

The DART is the automated shuttle between Luton Airport Parkway station and the airport terminal. It takes 4 minutes, runs 24 hours a day, and comes every four minutes at peak times and every seven off-peak.

An adult single is £4.90, a child aged 5 to 15 is £2.45 and under-fives travel free. The important detail: if you buy a rail ticket to London Luton Airport rather than to Luton Airport Parkway, the DART leg is already included and you do not need a separate ticket.
