Things to do in Luton: two free museums, five parks

Luton’s two best days out cost nothing. Stockwood Discovery Centre and Wardown House are both run by The Culture Trust, both free to enter and both open every day from 11am to 5pm. Between them they hold Europe’s largest carriage collection, a set of period walled gardens and the story of the hat trade that built the town.

Everything on this page was checked against the venue’s own website on 13 August 2026, including opening hours and prices, because nothing wastes a Saturday faster than driving to somewhere that shut last year.

The two free museums

Stockwood Discovery Centre

Set in Stockwood Park on the southern edge of town, this is the bigger of the two. It holds Europe’s largest carriage collection, galleries running from prehistory to the present, a set of period walled gardens and the sensory and medicinal Discovery Gardens, plus an outdoor play area and the Garden Café, which cooks with produce from its own garden. There are six Blue Badge bays and two coach spaces. Afternoon tea needs pre-booking on 01582 548600.

From 18 September to 31 October 2026 it hosts the British Wildlife Photography Awards.

Wardown House, Museum and Gallery

A Victorian mansion in Wardown Park, ten minutes’ walk north of the town centre, laid out as a period household room by room. The Regiment Gallery covers Luton’s hat-making trade, when more than 400 factories operated in the town in the 1800s, and the Morning Room Art Gallery changes through the year. There is a lift to the first floor, accessible toilets and a café overlooking the park. Running until 10 January 2027 is Expressions in Headwear, a show of work by millinery students, which is exactly the right exhibition for this building.

Parks and green space

Five Luton parks retained their Green Flag Award in July 2026: Brantwood Park, Memorial Park, People’s Park, Stockwood Park and Wardown Park. Stockwood and Wardown are the two to aim for if you want a museum attached to the walk.

Wardown Park is also the reason Old Bedford Road, which runs along its eastern edge, is the most expensive street in Luton.

Leagrave Park on Sundon Park Road, LU3 3AE, is the one with the geography. The source of the River Lea is here, the start of an 83-kilometre run down to the Thames that passes the 2012 Olympic Stadium on the way. The park also has a children’s play area, bowling green, football and cricket pitches, and tennis and basketball courts.

Culture and heritage

The Hat Factory Arts Centre

65 to 67 Bute Street, LU1 2EY. The town’s main arts venue, with a 105-seat studio theatre, an art gallery, a 230-capacity music room, the Basement Bar for comedy and smaller gigs, and a café. It opens Monday to Thursday 8:30am to 4:30pm, Friday 8:30am to midnight, Saturday 9am to midnight and Sunday 9am to 7pm. Box office 01582 878100.

St Mary’s Church

Church Street, LU1 3JF. Luton’s only Grade I listed building, begun in 1121 and consecrated in 1137, though most of what you see is 14th and 15th century. It is open to visitors on Wednesday and Thursday from 10:30 to 13:00 and Sunday from 08:45 to 12:00, and heritage tours can be arranged for groups through the church office. Summer hours can be reduced, so check before a special trip.

Sport and swimming

Active Luton runs seven venues in the borough: Inspire: Luton Sports Village, Lea Manor Recreation Centre, Lewsey Sports Park and Pool, Stockwood Park Athletics Centre, Stockwood Park Golf Centre, High Town Gym and Wellbeing Centre and The Giggles soft play. It also runs Luton’s five libraries, at Central, Leagrave, Lewsey, Marsh Farm and Stopsley.

Two live notices as of 13 August 2026: the dive pit at Inspire is closed until Monday 24 August with reduced 25-metre lane swimming, and the pool hoists at Lea Manor and Lewsey are out of order. If either matters to your visit, ring ahead.

Luton Town play in League One in 2026/27 at Kenilworth Road, with the home season opening on 22 August against Notts County. The club’s new Power Court stadium is under construction in the town centre and is not expected to open until the 2028/29 season, so Kenilworth Road has at least two more years in it. Luton Rising presents the town’s largest classical concert, with the Luton Youth Percussion Orchestra, the Luton Youth Funk Band and the Luton Music Service Proms Symphony Orchestra. Just outside the borough

Two well-known days out near Luton are not in the borough, which matters if you are checking council information or bus routes.

• Someries Castle, the 15th-century brick gatehouse beside the airport, is in Central Bedfordshire, in Caddington parish, despite its LU2 postcode.
• Whipsnade, home of the ZSL zoo about eight miles west, is also Central Bedfordshire, not Luton.
